Capsule – The saltworks!

Capsule – The saltworks!

This capsule is presented by Chasse et pêche dans la peau in collaboration with Import Export Fourrures.

Today, we’re delighted to take you into the woods with Marc to discuss a crucial topic for hunters: salt flats. Why make a saltworks?

Where to place it?

What are the mistakes to avoid?

We’ll be addressing these and other questions at this enriching meeting.

Importance of the Salt Works

Salt pans play an essential role in wildlife management and habit formation. The main purpose of a saltworks is to replenish the mineral deficiencies of the wildlife, such as moose and deer, that frequent the area.

By offering a healthy feed supplement, we ensure that the animals consume quality nutrients, which is crucial since we’ll also be consuming these animals later on.

Choosing the right location

The location of a saltworks is strategic. We chose a damp area with stagnant water, allowing the minerals to dissolve and attract the animals.

This wetland also guarantees a return on investment, as the nutrients deposited by the salt blocks diffuse efficiently into the water, attracting moose and deer to come and drink.

Preparing the Saline

Saline preparation begins with the application of specific products. We use salt blocks and minerals to attract the animals.

It’s important to wear gloves to avoid leaving human odors behind, as animals are very sensitive to foreign smells. Products should be dispersed around the saline and directly into the water to maximize their effectiveness.

Avoiding common mistakes

Some common mistakes can reduce the effectiveness of a saline solution. For example, it’s crucial not to neglect the cleaning of the area and to camouflage human odors.

Another common mistake is to use non-organic products, which can be harmful to the environment. It’s best to use natural products that don’t pollute the water table.

Use of Products

The products used in saltworks must be chosen with care. We recommend the use of sulfur, a mineral appreciated by moose. By dispersing the sulfur on moist soil, the water becomes loaded with minerals and animals can easily absorb them.

Other products, such as minerals and proteins, can be added to enrich the saline environment.

Creating Habits

Creating habits in animals is essential to attracting them to the saltworks on a regular basis. By visiting the saltworks every six to ten days, depending on the density of the animal population, hunters can establish a routine.

Animals, like moose, get used to these regular visits and keep coming back, which increases the chances of observing and hunting them.

Preparing for hunting

When preparing for the hunt, it’s important to choose the right shooting positions. We recommend positioning the stations according to the prevailing winds to maximize the chances of success.

Choosing trees that offer good camouflage is also crucial to remaining invisible to animals.

Respect for the environment

Respecting the environment is a priority. Once the salt pans and shooting stations have been set up, it’s essential to remove all the garbage and leave the area clean.

This includes the packaging of the products used. By leaving the area untouched, we minimize our impact on nature and ensure a healthy environment for the animals.

In conclusion, creating and maintaining a saltworks requires preparation and vigilance. By following these tips, hunters can maximize their chances of attracting animals and having a successful hunt while respecting the environment.

Remember to always wear gloves, camouflage your odors, and choose organic products for a positive impact on local flora and fauna.
